Small update and some reflections
Added a simple set of instructions in the beginning to clarify the UI. I'm going to exhibit my games in my local town and since many visitors might not be very used to games I thought it might be helpful.
It's now approaching two years since I made this game about surviving as a parent and child after climate collapse. Because I always want to think about mobilizing activism and resistance in the face of climate crisis, apocalypse is probably not a theme I would have chosen myself, but as I saw this game jam and the opportunity to incorporate climate themes I jumped at the opportunity.
It became a way for myself to reflect on feelings of guilt, grief and fears for the future. I'm happy with the game and it feels very meaningful to me, it's definitely one of the most emotional projects I've released here. However the setting of the game is apocalyptic, taking place after some kind of dramatic societal climate collapse and I wonder if the message is positive in the end or if it can be seen as resigning itself to climate breakdown. The dialogue is supposed to encourage thoughts about how it came to be that way, about the characters complicity or not and ultimately inspire a resolve to not let this future become true, but I'm not sure if it works.
Anyway, the relative success of this game (although in a very small game jam) made me feel that it might be worth to try to keep exploring this niche of games, politics and climate for me, so it's definitely had a positive effect on my own productivity. I've released 9 other small games after this one, with lots of other perspectives on the climate crisis, activism and resistance which I'm very happy about so that feels great. In case you played this game when it came out and have stuck around, thanks a lot! And also if you read all the way down here I guess, haha.
Was it always like this, dad?
